It is the time of year when many are looking for a professional to help guide them through the ever changing tax laws and the best way to minimize their tax consequences. For many in Bonners Ferry and the surrounding area, those seeking such professional advice have the benefit of Jim Hutchens, a Certified Public Accountant with over 30 years of experience who has an office right here in Bonners Ferry.
Hutchens practiced in Spokane for approximately 17 years prior to moving to Sandpoint in late 1998 when he purchased a CPA firm previously owned by Michael Merrell. Since that time he has become well known and highly regarded in North Idaho for not only his knowledge, but also his superior customer service.
In August 2012 Hutchens expanded his practice when he purchased the firm of Brian C. Jensen, CPA, who had offices in both Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry.
In his over 30 years of tax experience, Hutchens has represented a variety of clients, including individuals, small businesses and large corporations. In addition to tax preparation, Hutchens also prepares financial statements and advises businesses and individuals in all areas of tax planning. He takes pride in providing personalized service for all his clients.
Hutchens has a staff of several highly experienced, knowledgeable and professional bookkeepers. His Bonners Ferry office is open Thursdays from 8 to 5 pm.
His staff includes accountant Zach Spohn, office manager and bookkeeper, Mary-Claude Margairaz, bookkeepers Shannon Randall-Dunton and Tammy Wolfgang, and administrative assistants Melissa Colin and Jennifer Lamb.
Also employed is Lou MacAfee, an enrolled agent who has over 30 years of accounting experience. Enrolled agents must first pass a comprehensive IRS test and participate in continuing education thereby earning them the privilege of representing clients before the Internal Revenue Service.
MacAfee is also a QuickBooks Pro Advisor and has taught QuickBooks classes for many years, an expertise that many of Hutchens’ clients have found beneficial.
Jim and his wife Patty are active members of the Sandpoint community. Jim was a member of Business Networking International for 13 years, is president of the board for Lakeview Cemetery, serves as treasurer of his homeowners association and has been a long time supporter of local youth athletics.
